Approximately 1.6 million young people experience homelessness in the United States every year. Forty percent of them identify as LGBTQ. Many of these young people face rejection from their parents and physical, emotional or sexual abuse at home. They become “refugees” in their own country.
The Ali Forney Center is the largest agency dedicated to LGBTQ homeless youths in the country. I am proud to have volunteered with this organization for years, and last year I was granted the privilege of becoming a Board Member.
It is heartbreaking that an organization like the Ali Forney Center needs to exist; it is heartwarming that it does.
For my birthday, I have contributed to support AFC and its mission through Project Birthday. Please consider joining me in celebrating the many birthdays of the displaced young people AFC is determined to protect.
